HOLES UP TOP
—-Human-made holes up top at Karahantepe and the whole world gold, rock gold going on forever. It should be bleak. But it isn’t. No limit in sight. ——And Robert up there finding peace of mind.
KARAHANTEPE
This ancient site was discovered in the 1990s, in the same Fertile Crescent region as Gobeklitepe. Excavation was begun in 2019. I was lucky enough to visit in 2021 and did these drawings from photos taken then.
SHEPHERD
—-Shepherd & his donkey alone in an immensity of rocky gold. —— We passed him on the hill, returning from Karahantepe, and stopped to chat. I did two studies, one from life and one later from a photo which included the donkey.

THE WATER PIT
—The Water Pit at Karahantepe — Can you see the fox and the snake below the water channel at the top of the pit? After carving it out in drawing, snakes & foxes seem to appear everywhere. I’m sure the ancients found it so.—— This deep hole, which I call the Water Pit, is at the far end of the dig at Karahantepe, then the Snake Pit, then the Throne Room (Enclosure AD) Foxes & snakes about at these sites. Both may represent a comet which devastated Earth about 12,000 years ago.
KARAHANBEAST
—c9000 BCE — I see this as a man held by a great protecting animus. But in patriarchal Turkey this is “a man carrying a leopard on his back.” I think both are correct. — Great protector spirit — New in the Archeological Museum at Şanliurfa — Karahantepe totem — the human head is life-sized.——
