Book 14: RETURN TO ISTANBUL

STYLIN’ BAYRAM

Bayram was having a very good year in the carpet business.

DREAMS IN LACE

Elizabeth & Amy – Dreams in lace – Kybele Museum – Dantelli Ruyalar——-When Elizabeth saw this she said, “Lips! You gave me lips!”

PROFESSOR ACUN & THE VIEW

[Professor] Şeniz Acun & the view from Marmara Hotel – a happy night in March 2004——She taught at the University where I was to start teaching in the fall, and was very nice to me, took me to dinner and made me welcome when I was hired there. Her students adored her.

 HANDSOME VOLKAN

I have zero recollection of this drawing, but it looks like it was started in the restaurant up top of the Marmara Hotel.

Just arrived, with some tourists from Taiwan.

YEDITEPE KITSCH GATE

Yeditepe Univerisity is five years old and already cracking at the seams. (Written in 2020.)——

AT UNIVERSITY

“It’s a man’s world” – “There is no such thing as a Kurd” – At the university where once there was a forest——My new department head. He really said that. A lot.

HAPPY WITH HIMSELF

Two lovely students at the university. The students there were wonderful.

OSMAN’S ROOFTOP TEXTILES

The source of my Koran covers for these sketchbooks…and most of the patterns in Mike’s Museum – Grand Bazaar – Ulaş – Osman——Mike said in high glee that I made Osman look like a caveman, but Osman liked it fine. Each sketchbook had its own Koran cover for years and years, it was how I told them apart, but then I needed to see their titles in the bookcase.

THE RINGMAKER

Etem Acar fixing my treasured 1700-year-old ring. He gave me the antique Roman items here – and I gave him a print of this portrait – Grand Bazaar – One of Etem’s rings – tiny glass ring – glass bracelet – bronze shroud pins – bronze thimble – bronze bracelet – another of Eytem’s rings – new silver around an antique Byzantine coin. I don’t think I will take it off for awhile – 9 April 2004——Whoo! They saw me coming. My “treasured” antique ring is fake. The bronze shroud pins may be antique. Bayram took a look at the Byzantine coin and told me it was a copy, but real gold and silver. A friend, stoned, had watched this guy work and thought he was Cellini. He’s not, but he is a ringmaker and he made a hell of a drawing. I kept all this stuff anyway.
