Book 20: DISPLACED

CHRIST OF THE WINEGLASS

One of four similarly-themed little frescoes crumbling off the wall niches of the old church in Şirinciç The one I drew two years ago is all gone now——Drawn in 20 minutes while Cynthia and Lili had a coffee. It’s a representation of the Host.

WINDOW AT CHORA

I love these triple windows at Chora…——The radiant brickwork around the windows represented the Light within, and the two vertical pillars are Ss Peter and Paul holding up the church.

RANDOM BYZANTINE ARCH

This arch is in the overgrown courtyard of ruins at Kalendarhane Camii. I’ve started to draw it twice and been interrupted each time. Maybe three will be the charm.

BYZANTINE CHRIST

Turkish Orthodox Church in Karaköy: This Byzantine-type Christ is of unknown vintage. The church is dated early 19thCentury. The amount of reflective yellowed varnish made it difficult to render, but sometimes you just gotta.

SEAT OVER THE SEA

A tree like a little seat. A curtain of pine & the sea blue beyond — I stayed over 2 hours – Such peace—— A trip to the Princes’ Islands with Lewis on a visit. I really, really hope I wasn’t de trop with that couple…

PINES ON A PRINCES’ ISLAND

The sea was deep green.

SHE HOOKED HIM!

Left Lewis with the adorable Rainbow kids on Burgazada, at the Full Moon Celebration. This couple made my ferry ride home. A big rock on her finger & an animated glow as she flirted madly with her bemused husband- or husband-to-be—–

LOCKED OUT

One of the neighborhood transvestite hookers locked out on a hot glaring morning——Oh, the poor kid… Tried to hail him from across the street but he was oblivious so I drew him. Eventually someone let him in.

STREET LIFE IN TARLEBAŞI

Devil horns that light up red, only 5 lira! – Pissy Frenchman wouldn’t let his wife & daughter buy my book – Transvestite hooker @ bus stop in Tarlebaşı ——

Byzantine Christ in Karaköy – I love this street life! – Hatuş  2 hours from Ankara – Hittite heaven——

UP FROM THE SPICE BAZAAR

On a Sunday. I was drawing in front of this centuries-old han for hours while a beggar down the street worked the crowd, being relieved of her take every hour by a male relative.

MIKE OUT FRONT

20 July 2007 Election Day: warm breezes in the long lit evening of a hot day – Mike out in front of Kybele in his deep purple shirt, olive turban & yellow scarf——- Mike and the hotel he designed are works of art.

ELECTION DAY

2 July 2007——Several political party vans haranguing the crowds in front of Yeni Mosque at the Spice Bazaar, when a new one zipped up, blasting music that made me want to dance. In seconds they whipped around and parked, awnings up, passing out flyers, and I knew they would win. They did.
