Book 18: SHIPWRECKED

GOLD CAT

-Mid-February 2005 – Pale gold cat on a grey rock amid gold ones – a grey winter day- Kitty, I hate to leave you.

From The Princess & The Pea, retold by Kieran McGovern, illustrated by me. A gem. You can find it at https://esolepacks.com/easystart

I set it in a parallel reality, in the Boukoleon Palace ruins on the shore below my apartment. Homesick and nostalgic, I modeled the characters after family and my ex-husband.

KITTY LOVE

-Ygor & Pinkie 2005 – “I can chew but not swallow” -Pinar—–Ygor and Pinkie were lovers for 14 years, even though both were fixed boys, and continued to carry on loudly up until Ygor died. Pinkie is still with me at this writing, in 2021. Pinar was referring to grasping new concepts. A wonderful phrase, so I recorded it.

LOOKS LIKE IT GREW THERE

Looks like it grew there – A tiny house in the Roman wall in Kumkapi with excited neighborhood resident—–It was gray-green, exactly the color of the ancient Roman wall around it. People told me I wasn’t safe drawing in that neighborhood, but nobody bothered me. Ever.

These were torn down a year after I drew them by the Belidiye, displacing several families, including the kid in the drawing.

ROMAN ARCH HOUSES

-3/29/05 – The tops of the row of minute dwellings built into a Roman wall by a populace determined to make it in the Old City. These little houses sprang up all over, called Gececondos, as they were tax-free if built in one night. But few were as delightful as these. I’m really sorry they’re gone, and really glad I drew them.
