He has worked there for 45 years — They are closing the Pera Palace after about 120 years, for renovation I am told. Nobody seems to know when it will re-open. Where will all these people go?——

Tahsin Arslan – Pera Palas Gift Shop 10 Years —- The original Logo for the Tünel Funikular. It was built just to take people up the hill to the Pera Palas. Before that, they were carried in palanquins. One is still in the lobby. IET.T 1871 Drawn in the Tünel – Painted Palanquin door —Hotel staffer Mehmet Bey looks to me like he was drawn by Charles Bragg——Love this simple antique logo with its smokestack, castle, minarets and swords.

 AT THE PERA PALACE

7:30-11 PM – Pera Palas – 18 September 2004——Next to the oldest working elevator in Istanbul. That’s me reflected in the mirrors at center. These were removed later for the present tony restoration. The staff brought me tea and goodies, couldn’t have been nicer.

This one is from Sultanahmet near Küçük Ayasofya – Jesus! They take a long time to draw! —  A more careful drawing of the Indian tapestry in the Ataturk Suite at Pera Palas, a gift from the Indian people to Ataturk. After his death someone noticed that the time, day and month of his death )11-11-9:06) is woven into the tapestry——
