NEW SKETCHBOOK 2011 - Trici
Papazoglu Han ©2011 by Trici Venola. Osman here takes the money for the washroom in this antique han (workplace) near Rustem Pasha Mosque in the Spice Bazaar. The guidebooks list these hans as 16th century, but that herringbone brickwork above Osman's head is early Byzantine, possibly 5th century. Up above, the brickwork is Ottoman. Festooned with plastic and wires and jammed with work, this han is a bustling happy strong place even though it looks like it's falling apart at the seams, well worth the fifteen or so hours I spent drawing it.
