BONES OF BYZANTIUM - Trici
Ayasofya Backside ©1999 by Trici Venola. Sultanahmet, Istanbul. Every three hundred years or so, the walls under Hagia Sophia's massive dome move apart enough to cause a collapse. Anchored by minarets, these buttresses were built during the reign of Sulieman the Magnificent by master Renaissance architect Mimar Sinan to fortify the dome. We have him to thank that the Great Basilica is still standing.
