Sphendone-Fountain Arch. Hippodrome, Sultanahmet, Istanbul, 2005. This wall, which holds up the Hippodrome and everything on it, was built 1700 years ago by Emperor Septimus Severus, and the brick is so old it looks like lumpy striped stone. Each arch is big enough for an elephant to pass through, and they used to be identical but time has made them highly individual. This one has an Ottoman fountain in front.
